The Mental Edge In Competitive Sports
The Coaches Best Friend
Why will I be your new best friend? Because
I can do two good things for you. I can work with your athletes and
teach them how to train their minds for competition. Second, I can teach
you the secrets to developing their mental game and you can pass that
along to your athletes. Either way, when they perform well, when it
counts, you look like
a genius.
I'm Paul S. Palmer, director of the Sports Motivation Clinic.
You know your sport and chances are you know a bit about motivation too.
However, you
can't teach athletes without the constant reminder that the mind
controls 90% of the outcome on game day. Rituals, traditions,
repetition, superstition and pep talks have been the tools of the coach
since caveman days. Are they effective tools? Sometimes. They are all
about getting the athletes' mind ready to play and creating a comfort
zone. But, they are all an indirect way of
getting the mind ready to play. It's like trying to trick the mind into
being ready for the big moment. You know, if you wear the same lucky
underwear every game, that you wore when you had that big win, you'll
guarantee another victory (if the team can stand the smell). It's
all about trying to get their mind ready for competition. That's a
good thing.
Superstition and other ways to influence the powers that be.
Superstition
and rituals have been a part of sports for as long as we've had
sports. If you believe your lucky socks help you win then by all means
don't take them off! It's part of that "believe to achieve" thing.
If you
think you can, is a better mind set than doubting yourself. Is
superstition and ritual a bad thing? No! It's part of a complex mix
that helps put
athletes into their performance zone. But a comfort zone
and a positive mind set alone may not help much at crunch time. If the
subconscious cannot perform it's function without the interference of
the conscious mind, you're screwed.
Hypnosis or mental conditioning
techniques can prepare the athlete for
that exact moment.
The better way to get their mind in the game.
Hypnosis and the mental conditioning techniques associated with it,
are a direct way to influence the part of
the mind responsible for sports performance. It's better than rituals,
superstition and pep talks, (not that there is anything wrong with
that). It works hand-in-hand with all that modern science has uncovered
on how the brain functions during peak performance
moments. If you're smart you'll let an expert (Mr.
Palmer) in mental conditioning help your
athletes get their heads in the game. So you can spend your valuable
time teaching them the game, technique, plotting strategy, guiding their physical development,
kicking dirt on the shoes of the umpire, throwing tantrums and other
objects when necessary.
I Teach The Teachers Too!
Coaches workshop
I can conduct a workshop (1 1/2 hours) for your coaching staff. It would
be similar to the workshop I do for teams only geared for the teacher
(that's you). I'll show you what I teach my athletes and show you how to
show them. It doesn't involve hypnosis and you are not expected to
became a hypnotist but it does involve relaxation
techniques you can easily pass on to your athletes. Coaches workshops
are $500.00. in the Chicago area and I come to you. If you have a small
coaching staff or just one, come see me at my office.
A Coaches Private Session
Mental Conditioning 101
Maybe a good first step into the world of mental conditioning is for you to get the information from the horses mouth. If you
are curious about my mental conditioning techniques, come see me, I'll
share. Are you embarrassed by your lack of knowledge in this area, don't
be, you are far from alone. A private session on mental conditioning
training with me can help you be a better coach. It doesn't involve
being hypnotized, it's a hour and a half of instruction on how this
stuff works and why and plenty of tips you can take back to use with
your athletes. Once you fully understand what I can do for your
athletes, maybe you'll send a few my way.
We can meet in secret!
No one will know you were ever their. I'll book you under an assumed
name and you can wear dark glasses when you walk in from the parking lot.
Why the secrecy? Because, I know an ugly secret. Most coaches don't know
squat about mental training, sports psychology and/or are using
techniques that would have been laughable 20 years ago. If you are not
current on the latest sports psychology theories and practices, you have
some catching up to do. A good start in learning how to improve your
athletes mental game is a 1 1/2 hour session with me. It will be a lot
of Q & A, and we can make the session specific to you team and your
sport. Same cost as a regular individual office visit $250.oo.
Add
another coach for fifty bucks!
Do you work with the young ones?
God bless you, you might even be doing it for free. Molding the
youth is a awesome responsibility. They get their basics from you, the
stuff they carry with them for the rest of their athletic career. You
need to know the rudiments of mental training more than anybody else.
Having a team workshop for a pee wee league team doesn't make much sense but I can teach you
the basics. Then I won't have to fix them later!
Call today and set up a session.
