The Secrets of the Mental Game
Team Sport Workshops
If you have a whole team that needs help, I can help.
I'm Paul S. Palmer, director, Sports Motivation
Clinic. Working with
all the athletes that compete on the same team helps everyone. Usually,
I'm working with that "special" athlete. She gets better but the rest of
the team is still erratic. If nothing else, it's no fun. Helping each
athlete play at the top of their game is what's called a real
"dream
team". A team workshop in the Chicago Area for amateur
athletes starts a
$600. for up to 20 and each athlete
gets their own CD. That's a
"dream" price!
My team seminars are geared toward high school and college
athletes. I teach them mental techniques they can use every day. I don't teach their sport and I
don't teach hypnosis. The relaxation exercises are derived from my 30
plus years of using clinical hypnosis in my practice. Relaxation has
always been at the heart of mentally preparing the athlete for
competition and I know the secrets of how to maximize that process.
Grammar school age athletes are better worked with one on one, with
a parent. Or, I'll teach the coaches. I
teach them the basics of mental conditioning and they can pass it on in
small increments as part of their regular coaching sessions.
FAT CHANCE! I always keep trying to get youth coaches
involved in teaching mental skills. It's never
too early to learn the basic techniques of how to keep your head in the
game. I'll keep trying.
I also work with adult teams.
If you want your softball team or bowling team to really kick butt
this season, you found the way. Yes, even old guys & gals can learn how to improve their mental
game. I've proved that again and again with golfers, but old farts tend to be more hard headed
than the kids. They don't do the daily (five minute) exercises very
often and hardly listen to the CD. The ones' that do are
amazed. If you are an old dog that wants to learn a new trick,
call me. I'll make you more consistent and a better team player because
you'll learn to play at the top of your game and take advantage of your
years of experience.
My seminars are limited to 20 athletes. (You don't have to have 20) It's a workable number and
this seems to accommodate most teams. For larger teams (football), we
need to break the team up into smaller groups.
Team sport presents a different type of mental challenge.
Playing as a team, team chemistry, jelling together are but a few of
the terms to describe what happens when a group of individual players
come together as one. It's the goal of any team. I'm sure you work on that team unity thing every time you
practice. Should your mental exercises include this sort of
thing ? Of course, YES.
Helping each athlete prepare to play their personal best is the usual
first step in mental preparation. But there are unique team intangibles
that can be worked on too. Here's one example.
The eyes in the back of your head!
Position awareness: That six sense of knowing where your teammates
are on the field or the court.
Many top athletes seem to have an
awareness of the game that goes beyond what their eyes and ears take in.
They seem to be able to anticipate a situation before it happens. Are
they psychic? Do they have the powers to look into the future? More likely, it's
their subconscious recognizing patterns and making connections far quicker
than the conscious mind can keep up. It's another example of how the
automatic part of the mind plays your game better and faster than your
conscious mind. Again, the question is, which part of the mind do you
want working for you at crunch time? Mr. Palmer knows the
secret of how
to get the subconscious onboard, when it counts. Come see me this week!
I also offer a coaches workshop. See
coaches for more info.
